Smasher (Imperial Guard)

So here I go, the start of another team, the team this time being The Shi'ar Imperial Guard.

First up is Smasher, who first appeared in X-Men #107. I decided to go with the original costume as worn by the first Smasher.

What I thought was going to be an easy paint job with a bit of sculpting, turned out to be a little bit more problematic than I first thought. He has bands around his waist, wrists & legs, which were applied using a band of Miliput around each. Once it was set I then had to sand smooth, then cut the shapes to the correct size. Milliput isn't sticky so when you start cutting it tends to seperate and fall off, which then means using super-glue, a steady hand, and lots of patience... and a lot of swear words used, every time I dropped a piece. Applying the bands took three days in all, plus an extra day for the hair. The paint application was the easy bit. This all tied in with working, and building Lego for my 5 year old son, mean't it took a little longer than it could have, if my sole focus was on my customs.

I used the Wonder Man figurine for my base, for the obvious reason that Smasher looks like Wonder Man.

Smasher

Next up is Impulse, another Imperial Guard member. Although I'm a little undecided as to which colour to paint him. More recent costumes are White and red, but earlier ones had him wearing a purple and light cerise colour one, I'm tending to swing towards the white one.

Cat-Man (Ani-Men)

At long last I've completed a whole team! Today I finished off the final member of the Ani-Men, Cat-Man.

I used a Beast figurine for my base figure, it was the right size, and build, and had that cat look about it, especially the feet, which saved me a lot of grief trying to create cat like feet.

The hardest thing to do, like all the others, was to sculpt a completely new set of features, to keep it in line with the original 1960's feel, and look. I have tweaked the look a little, but tried to keep it looking like an original character, not one of the more modern versions that appeared in The Uncanny X-Men comic.

Here's all four of the Ani-Men together, at last.

A few have asked me why I've not included included Dragonfly in this little oddball menagerie. She 1st appeared in X-Men #94, she wasn't a part of the team that went up against Daredevil on two separate occasions.

The issues they appeared in were...

There are so many villains from DD's early days which I would love to do, and eventually I will do them. There's a certain innocence about them that fit the 60's & 70's, but if you inserted them into today's comics would look a little out of place. Death Stalker, The Matador, Hyde & Cobra, Stilt-Man, Jester, and I could go on, and on.

Next up I'm going to start on, as promised, members of The Imperial Guard, with the first one being Smasher, followed by Impulse, and Starbolt, these I have the base figurines for already.
